Thanks. I think that’s what makes it work. Some symbols are old because they never stopped being true. A shadow is so familiar, so ordinary, that its absence feels wrong before the mind can even explain why. That immediate sense of wrongness mattered a lot to me in this piece.
The shadow is a very classic symbol, but I think that’s exactly why this piece feels even more frightening. 🙂
